Grammar Communicatively
What do our students want to
learn English for? As teachers, this a question we should ask ourselves. The
most predominant answer would surely be…we learn to communicate, to interact
with others,. etc. So, what do students need to learn so complicated grammar
rules?
Grammar is essential, indeed.
However, we, teachers, can change the students’ perspective towards it. It is
the methods, the strategies and techniques
that we use what can make the difference.
Grammar
rules will be clearer and be remembered better when students formulate them
themselves (inductive learning) than when
teachers formulate them (deductive learning).
But… What is inductive learning?
In contrast to
the deductive method, inductive instruction makes use of student “noticing”.
Instead of explaining a given concept and following this explanation with
examples, the teacher presents students many examples showing how the concept
is used. This is for students to “notice”, through examples, how the concept
works.
Then…What to do the teachers?
**Integrated grammar teaching is a unique and an authentic approach because it implements the pre-, while- and post-stages.
**Make it meaningful and related to Students lives.
**Provide real contexts.
**Recall it over and over ( practice makes practice)
**Give Students the chance to make mistakes and self- correct their own mistakes.
